Victoria's plumbing insurance gap. The recommendations the government has not implemented

Jacinta Allan stated in Parliament in relation to building law issues: “As I was outlining to the house, we have taken strong action. We have given those investigative agencies the powers they need. Police are laying 70 charges. The Labour Hire Authority is cancelling construction licences. Also we commissioned a review and are implementing all recommendations of that review, which is seeing a dedicated complaints pathway being put in place. The culture is changing. We have changed the law as well.”

I have been commenting for some time about an obvious failure by the Victorian government to address the problem with plumbing insurance in Victoria.

For some, it might seem like a dry issue… pardon the pun, but really, this is a big issue.

When people are faced with leaking roofs and other ground plumbing issues and they discover that the insurance for plumbers and homeowners making claims is not fit for purpose there are big losses to the average homeowner.

But why do I keep raising this?

I keep raising this because there were specific recommendations in a recent report by Weir Legal and Consulting which raised concerning issues with insurer behaviour and coverage issues and which haven’t led to any changes by the government at all despite recommendations being made.

Jacinta Allen has stated just days ago that, and I quote, that they “are implementing all recommendations of that review”

I can only assume this is a reference to the above review becuase it was the review which lead to major legal change for domestic building in Victoria.

The problem is and the point I’m making is that the government are not implementing “ALL” of the recommendations and for some reason Australian homeowners and plumbers are left wondering.
